The Issues

New nuclear

Although new nuclear is a reliable and relatively low carbon source of energy, it is costly and takes a long time to build. Waste disposal is a key question too.

Nuclear plants are economical to run but very capital- and time-intensive to build. The uranium used in nuclear plants is relatively cheap and plentiful.

Although a very reliable energy source, nuclear is less flexible than fossil fuels, and building and planning a nuclear plant can take over a decade.

Nuclear is a low carbon energy source but we do need to resolve the ongoing debate about how best to dispose of nuclear waste long term.

We’ve created a joint venture with RWE to build at least 6GW of nuclear capacity in the UK and have secured NDA land at Oldbury in South Gloucestershire and at Wylfa on Anglesey.

As a Group, E.ON has investments in 21 working reactors in Germany and Sweden. The E.ON Group holds the majority in nine of these and is the responsible operator of six..

E.ON is also part owner of the industry-owned company which is implementing technical solutions for deep geological disposal of long-lived radioactive wastes in Sweden (SKB).
