Talking Energy Climate change

The Issues

Climate change

The reality of climate change poses a massive challenge to our society and we believe that we all have a responsibility to reduce our carbon footprint.

The impact of carbon emissions on the environment is a serious issue and one which we all need to take responsibility for. The energy industry is responsible for huge amounts of CO2 being emitted so energy companies are taking big steps to reduce emissions, as well as helping their customers to reduce their own carbon footprints.

26% of Britain’s carbon emissions come from homes so we can all play a part in this by reducing our carbon footprints through improved energy efficiency.

At E.ON UK, our target is to cut the carbon released by each kw of electricity we generate by 10% from 2005-2012, having already reduced it by a third since 1990. As a Group, we have committed to reducing the carbon intensity of our generation activity by 50% by 2030 (on 1990 levels).

In the UK we’re using and developing renewable energy projects as part of our balanced energy mix. We’re investing £2 billion alone in the London Array wind farm with partners DONG Energy and Masdar. Once complete, the scheme will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm. We also own 21 other wind farms and one of the UK’s largest dedicated biomass plants in Lockerbie, Scotland. We’re investing in a marine scheme as well. We’ve recently been awarded two sites in the Crown Estate’s first round of marine energy leases, located around 5km off the west coast of Orkney which we believe are large enough for a wave power development of up to 100MW.

We’ve spent over £100m on energy efficiency measures since 2006, installing over 350,000 cavity wall and loft installation measures as well as energy efficient boilers and smart meters to help customers manage their energy more efficiently. We offer advice online and have also been taking our Winter Advice Bureau into city centres across the UK.

We’ve introduced our new product incubator business, introducing new energy efficiency microgeneration products such as this year, we’ll be making affordable solar panels a reality for UK homes and will soon launch a new initiative to show families and businesses how to take the next step to energy fitness.
