Affordability

Energy needs to be affordable as well as reliable and lower carbon but no single source of energy can meet all of these needs.

Keeping energy affordable as well as reliable and lower carbon is a huge challenge for the energy industry in the UK. Add to that the fact that we have to replace a third of our power stations in the next 10 to 15 years, and there are clear implications for the cost of energy.

Wholesale price and demand have an impact on energy prices, Many homes in the UK are of poor quality and more needs to be done to help people insulate their homes, and to protect against heat loss to reduce energy bills.

There are many different tariff options available to customers for their energy usage and it’s important to make sure that each household is on the tariff which best suits their energy usage. But more needs to be done to protect vulnerable groups and to help people become more energy efficient too.

To keep energy affordable we monitor energy prices and work hard to ensure that people have all the information they need. We’re also helping people to save energy too.

As well as developing a balanced mix of energy sources to keep energy affordable, reliable and lower carbon, we’re also helping people to better understand and manage their energy usage to keep their bills down.

We reduced both our gas and electricity prices this year after offering the lowest gas prices through the winter and continue to monitor wholesale prices closely. This winter we’re also offering our WinterGas tariff which gives people the opportunity to cap their gas price until March 2010.

We also removed the surcharge for our gas prepayment meter customers and brought their prices into line with our standard prices although these are more expensive for us to support.

  • Pearl Korn: Brad Pitt Leads The Way In Building A Sustainable, Affordable, Energy-Efficient Community In N.O. 1 day ago

We should consider the resurrection and rebirth of the Lower 9th Ward in New Orleans, a community decimated by Katrina's rage and fury in which four thousand homes were leveled. We must never forget those bodies on the streets, and people standing on roofs screaming for help. Or those thousands huddled together in the Astrodome in squalor and hunger, shock and disbelief. Or those toxic home trailers provided by President Bush, who proclaimed, "Brownie, you're doing a heckuva job!" to Mike Brown..
