How we do business

Regulation and energy policy

The UK faces a major challenge in reducing carbon dioxide emissions, whilst at the same time ensuring electricity supplies remain secure and affordable for customers. Energy, climate change, environmental management and social responsibility are inextricably linked, and have never been the subject of greater focus politically and throughout society.

Energy policy

UK energy policy is focussed on radically cutting carbon dioxide emissions to mitigate the effects of climate change; and on ensuring that energy supplies are both secure and affordable for customers, particularly those customers who are on low incomes or vulnerable. These objectives are not always compatible and, given this ‘trilemma’ identifying policies which together achieve all these goals is a very challenging task for Government. We share these objectives in our own business and can play a material part in helping to deliver them at the national level. For this reason we engage with Government and many other stakeholders on how energy policy can best be taken forward.

Regulation

We believe that a competitive market is the most effective and efficient way of ensuring security of supply, but recognise that regulation is necessary in some areas. Where our activities are subject to economic regulation, we work closely with the energy regulator Ofgem, and other stakeholders to develop the markets so that they can better serve our customers and adapt to the challenges ahead.
