Environmental emissions

Each of our plants has a ‘Getting better’ plan which has produced significant savings across some of our core processes in the business.

Reducing waste

Reducing waste

New initiatives have reduced spoil to landfill, increased the recycling of waste meters and brought in plant waste improvement programmes.

Water use

Water Use

We use significant amounts of water in our generation business. Following water audits we have reduced use by half across some of our sites.

Protecting biodiversity

Protecting biodiversity

We protect, survey and enhance the ecological value of our sites. We educate employees and suppliers. We complete community challenges and even monitor butterflies

We’re aware of our responsibility towards the environment and we take this seriously, as well as encouraging our employees to do the same.

Reducing our total carbon emissions and harnessing renewable energy isn’t the only way we can reduce our impact on the environment. For us it’s also about minimising all our impacts, reducing waste and the resource we use, other emissions such as SO2, NOx These emissions are produced during combustion and contribute to greenhouse effect, local air pollution and acid rain. and particulates and minimising our impacts on biodiversity.

It’s important to take actions now to preserve the planet for future generations.

Some of our Environmental initiatives

  • The total waste from our office buildings fell by 28%,
  • 36% reduction in the amount of waste sent to landfill compared to 2009

There were 24 reportable environmental incidents last year, compared to 39 in 2009

  • Of these, 13 were in our generation business, 10 in our distribution business and 1 in our renewable business.

We converted 56 tonnes of our total food waste to generate renewable energy with the help of our catering suppliers Baxter Storey.
