We remain committed to educating young people about all aspects of energy and have focused our strategy around creating an energy literate generation.

We use our ever-popular E.ON Energy Experience to teach youngsters about energy consumption at home, in the community and globally.

Its objectives are to:

  • Build awareness among children, teachers and parents of key energy issues
  • Create a fun, interactive, practical tool that is memorable and informative
  • Meet the educational needs of 5 to16 year olds in line with the National Curriculum
  • Turn participants into responsible energy consumers, encouraging them to reduce energy waste
  • Promote E.ON as a responsible employer and an authority on energy issues and policy

The programme has a number of different aspects; for example: ‘The Town of Total Darkness’ is an award winning interactive touring play for primary schools, which links back to the Energy Experience. To date, the play has reached over 6,000 children in 44 schools.

The Big Buzz (a giant pedal powered electric buzzer game) has also been developed to support a PR campaign showing how kinetic energy is used.

The programme is supported in primary and secondary schools by over 200 fully-trained E.ON volunteers.

During 2010, a key focus was to ensure our community strategy was fully aligned to our business strategy. Education continues to play a huge part in our strategy, particularly the Energy Experience, which, because of its reputation both internally and externally, has become the flagship for our education programme. The Energy Experience has become a ‘springboard’ for other programmes across the business, including:

  • ‘Talking Energy Live Educate’. A touring interactive event giving students the opportunity to discuss energy related issues and take part in activities directly related to the Energy Experience
  • ‘Sustainable Energy Educate.’ This programme used elements of the Energy Experience, and enabled us to support schools with the installation of new technologies, along with education packs

We have developed a campaign called ‘Adopt an Energy Monitor’. This gave students the opportunity to ‘adopt an energy monitor’ by taking it home (as they might do with the school pet), and then report back to the class with their findings. The campaign ran across 10 cities over a four week period.
