Over the next five years, a number of the UK’s ageing power stations will close, leaving the country with a potential energy shortfall in the next decade.

But as we know, it’s not just about keeping the lights on, that’s just one of the three major challenges we face. We also need to keep energy affordable and reduce our carbon emissions too. So the decisions we take today are crucial, because they will affect future generations.

Keeping the lights on

We’re investing billions of pounds in developing a balanced portfolio of generation options because we believe this is the only way to solve the three huge challenges we face. Gas, clean coal and nuclear have their part to play alongside renewables. And we’re upgrading our distribution networks at the same time. We want to reduce the number of power cuts and the amount of wastage as power travels from its source to our customers. We also want out network to be smart enough to cope with future generation options.

In 2009, we generated 33 TWh of electricity. That’s enough electricity to supply more than 7 million homes

  • That’s 18% less energy than in 2008 (the recession is partly responsible)

We’ve invested £867 million in generation and distribution assets contributing to ensure reliable supply for the UK.

  • We’re building one of the world’s largest Combined Heat and Power (CHP) gas-fired power stations on the Isle of Grain
  • We’ve formed a partnership with RWE to build two new nuclear power stations by 2025. The 6GW of capacity is roughly enough to power a city the size of Greater London
  • We're also investing in London Array and Robin Rigg wind farms and in our distribution network.

We continued to improve our network performance and reduced our customer minute lost from 143.1 in 2008 to 132.4 in 2009.
