Create a low carbon society

Windfarm

We want to provide the framework for moving to a low carbon society by changing the way energy is produced and used.

Renewables

Renewables

We’re one of the UK’s leading developers of renewable energy. We currently operate 21 wind farms and one of the UK’s largest dedicated biomass plants in Lockerbie, Scotland.

Future low carbon solutions

Future low carbon solutions

We want to advance low carbon energy solutions and energy efficiency technologies and invested £12.7m in 2009.

It’s now widely accepted that climate change is a man-made threat to our way of life and the environment around us that requires urgent action.

In our industry, we’re uniquely placed to take the lead in combating climate change. Indeed, as one of the industries whose activities inevitably have an effect on the environment, we see it as our responsibility. We also want to explain to our customers the importance of reducing our dependence on carbon, so they can join us in the fight to safeguard our planet.

Renewable energy

We cannot afford to wait; we’re taking action now because the decisions we take today will shape the legacy we leave our children and our children’s children.

Our carbon reduction programme is already having an impact.

  • Since 2008, we’ve seen a 23% reduction in our absolute CO2 emissions from our electricity generation
  • Our carbon intensity from electricity generation has fallen by 8% compared to 2008
  • E.ON offices are using 8% less energy, saving 2,127 tonnes of CO2That's enough to fill nearly 370 double decker buses
  • · Our overall fleet carbon emissions (business miles, hire cars and commercial vehicles) was reduced by 18.2%

We’re one of the UK’s leading developers of renewable energy

  • · We currently operate 21 wind farms, including Robin Rigg, one of the UK’s largest offshore wind farms, which is now fully operational. Construction of onshore wind farms at Haswell Moor (12MW), Butterwick Moor (30MW) and Rosehall (34MW) is planned to start in 2010
  • Construction of phase one (650MW of 1,000MW) of the world’s largest offshore wind farm, London Array, has started Displacing the emissions of 1.9million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year - enough to fill Wembley Stadium 250 times over.
  • The Great Eppleton windfarm (8MW) has been repowered
  • We’ve been awarded leases off the coast of Orkney in the Crown Estate’s first round of lease awards. We believe this will be large enough for a wave power project of up to 100MW

Energy efficiency

  • Our carbon emissions reduction target (CERT) is to help customers to save 28.8 million tonnes of carbon by 2011. We’re ahead of the industry average and enabled our customers to save a potential 11.5 million tonnesThis has been acheived by installing measures like cavity and loft insulation and ground source heat pumps. in 2009 through energy efficiency measures
  • In 2009, we spent £12.7m on researching and developing low carbon solutions. We’ve installed 7,000 Smart meters and are now looking at the effect they have on customers’ energy consumption and will use this data for a larger roll-out to customers as part of the Government’s plans that every household will have a smart gas and electricity meter by 2020.
