We’re acutely aware of our responsibility towards the environment and we take this seriously, as well as encouraging our employees to do the same.

Reducing our carbon emissions and harnessing renewable energy isn’t the only way we can reduce our impact on the environment. For us it’s also about minimising all our impacts, reducing waste and the resource we use, other emissions such as SO2, NOx and particulates and minimising our impacts on biodiversity.

It’s important to take actions now to preserve the planet for future generations.

Some of our Environmental initiatives

  • In 2009, all our large combustion plant directive (LCPD) sites beat their targets for SO2 by achieving a reduction of 38% and for NOX with a reduction of 18%These emissions are produced during combustion and contribute to greenhouse effect, local air pollution and acid rain.
  • The total waste from our office buildings fell by 22%,
  • We beat our own landfill waste reduction target of 10% by a further 8%. Our next target is zero waste to landfill in our retail business by 2012

There were 39 reportable environmental incidents last year.

  • Of these, 13 were in our generation business, 14 in our distribution business and 12 in our renewable business.
  • Just over a third of our environmental incidents were from fluid-filled cable leaks on our network. Although this is a reduction of 6% on 2008, we want this number to be lower still in 2010.

We converted 3% (50 tonnes) of our total food waste to generate 11.17MWh of renewable energy with the help of our catering suppliers Baxter Storey
